Rector of Gruni Shares Views on Georgia’s Education Reform

The national newspaper “New Education” recently featured insights from Mamuka Tavkhelidze, Rector of Grigol Robakidze University, regarding Georgia’s newly proposed concept for reforming the education system.

According to Tavkhelidze, Georgia’s education sector has continuously undergone reforms to keep pace with evolving socio-economic and technological changes. He emphasized that the system is highly responsive to new challenges and naturally signals concern when progress slows—something reflected in previous student protests demanding better learning conditions.

Tavkhelidze reiterated his long-held belief that the state should support as many students as its economic capacity allows, ensuring broad access to quality education. He noted that earlier decades saw specialized universities adopting unrelated academic programs as a survival strategy, but such practices now hinder institutional growth. Focusing on core strengths, he said, will allow universities to improve the quality of their educational offerings.

He welcomed the government’s decision to make the new reform concept open to public discussion and expressed confidence that feedback from stakeholders will help shape a more effective and coordinated higher education model. Tavkhelidze also proposed organizing university-level roundtable discussions, involving both academic communities and reform authors, to ensure the final concept reflects well-aligned and well-informed perspectives.
